    https://floridathrifty.co.za/popia

Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 & Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013

This Manual is compiled by Florida Thrift in accordance with section 51 of PAIA and to address the requirements of POPIA. It explains how interested parties may request access to records held by us and how we safeguard personal information.

    1. Background to the Promotion of Access to Information Act

The Promotion of Access to Information Act, No. 2 of 2000 ("the Act" / "PAIA") was enacted on 3 February 2000, giving effect to the constitutional right of access to information held by the State and by another person where that information is required for the exercise or protection of any rights (section 32 of the Bill of Rights, Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996).

In terms of section 51 of the Act, all private bodies are required to compile an information manual ("PAIA Manual"). Where a request is made in terms of the Act, the body to whom the request is made is obliged to release the information, subject to applicable legislative and regulatory requirements and the grounds of refusal set out in the Act.

    2. Florida Thrift

Florida Thrift ("we", "our" or "us") operates a physical vintage and thrift retail store situated at 4 Madeline St, Florida, Roodepoort, 1709, Johannesburg. We sell pre-loved clothing, run a weekly Community Kettle feeding initiative, and manage local community outreach.

This PAIA & POPIA Manual is published on our official website: https://floridathrifty.co.za

    3. Purpose of the PAIA Manual

The purpose of PAIA is to promote the right of access to information, to foster a culture of transparency and accountability, and to empower people to exercise and protect their rights.

Section 9 of the Act recognises that the right of access to information is not unlimited and is subject to justifiable limitations, including: the reasonable protection of privacy; commercial confidentiality; and effective, efficient and good governance — balanced against the rights contained in the Bill of Rights.

This Manual complies with the guide contemplated in section 10 of the Act. The Information Regulator is responsible for regulating compliance with PAIA and the Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 ("POPIA").

    Can I Buy Items Online?

No — all purchases are in-person only. You can browse our catalog online and add items to a shopping list, then visit us to collect and pay at the till. We do not offer online checkout or delivery, because every piece is one-of-a-kind and needs to be tried on and inspected before you commit. As a result, the online catalog is a preview, not a shop. However, if you want a specific piece held until you arrive, message us on WhatsApp before you visit and we will set it aside for up to 48 hours. Because stock moves quickly, reserving in advance is the best way to guarantee a piece you love.

How Does Florida Thrift Help the Community?

We run a weekly Community Kettle feeding initiative, sharing 100+ hot meals weekly with families and homeless neighbours in the Florida area. Clothing donations fund groceries for those meals. We also support 5+ Early Childhood Development centres with nutritious meals, warm clothing and educational supplies for 200+ children weekly. See our updates & events page for upcoming community feeding days and clothing drives.

    Why This Matters

Food insecurity affects millions of South African households. According to Statistics South Africa, nearly a quarter of households experience inadequate food access, and our feeding initiative is a local response to that need.

Where Can I Donate Clothes in Roodepoort?

Florida Thrift is a clothing donation drop-off point in Florida, Gauteng. If you are looking for where to donate clothes in Johannesburg or a clothing donation spot in Roodepoort, bring your clean, quality items to 4 Madeline St during trading hours and our team will sort, grade and price them. Because we hand-pick every piece, we accept wearable items in good condition — denim, jackets, tees, knitwear and sneakers all welcome. Proceeds from the sale of donated pieces go directly toward buying groceries for the community feeding initiative. As a result, one bag of donated clothes can fund several warm meals for a family in need. However, please avoid donating torn, stained or unwearable items, because they cannot be sold and create extra sorting work for our volunteers.

There are several easy ways to reach us, because we want to make shopping and donating as convenient as possible. First, call us on +27 73 315 2112 during trading hours. Our Story — Sustainable Thrift Fashion Since 2018

Florida Thrift is a sustainable vintage and thrift shop in Florida, Roodepoort, Johannesburg. Since 2018, we have rescued quality pre-loved clothing from landfills and given it a second life — making affordable, eco-friendly fashion accessible to all. In other words, every garment you buy from us is one less piece sent to a landfill. As a result, our customers save money and reduce their environmental footprint at the same time.

    The Environmental Case for Second-Hand

Textile waste is a growing global problem. The UN Environment Programme estimates the fashion industry is responsible for up to 10% of global carbon emissions, and buying second-hand is one of the most effective ways to cut that footprint. Because fast fashion discards garments after a few wears, choosing pre-loved pieces directly reduces demand for new production.
